Catalogue Note
With swathes of colour and brushwork, Laura Knight transforms this woodland scene into something extra-ordinary. The bold palette and swirling strokes dance through the composition, ripples breaking the surface of the water where the young girl's humble fishing rod disturbs the flow. The painting displays Knight's brilliant command of colour and one gains a real sense of her pleasure from the scene in the lively, free-flowing brushstrokes. It recalls Knight's dazzling Lamorna sea views of swimmers such as Lamorna Cove (sold Sotheby's, 21 July 2005, lot 20), where the influence of the Impressionist and post-Impressionists is strongly felt.
The location of the present work is uncertain, although there are hints of the Lamorna stream, and the children are most probably local. A watercolour of the same children fishing in the stream, clearly related to the present oil, was exhibited in 2012 at Penlee House Gallery's Laura Knight In the Open Air (p.55 in the exhibition catalogue). It is likely the present work was executed in the 1920s, which coincides with Laura's visits to Lamorna, having left Cornwall for London with Harold following the end of World War I.
