Catalogue Note

Strayed Lambs reflects Richard Redgrave's interest in childhood - its innocence and vulnerability - and relates to a series of his best-known works which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1860, including Children in the Wood - the Evening and Children in the Wood - the Morning. The intense level of detail in the foliage shows the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite mantra, 'truth to nature'.
