Catalogue Note

An entry in Linnell's diary for 8th August 1877 records 'began Red Sunset', at a time when he was also working on Crossing the Bridge, and the artist worked on the picture on and off until February 1878. The painting remained in the artist collection until it was sold by order of his trustees in 1918, along with a number of other works by the artist that remained in his studio, and his famous collection of works by William Blake.

We are grateful to David Linnell for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
