Condition

Original canvas. There are faint signs of craquelure across the surface which appear stable and the work appears in good overall condition, may benefit from light clean. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered areas of infilling across the surface with denser areas around her right shoulder and forearm. These have been well executed and are consistent with a picture of this age. Held in an arched gilt plaster frame.

Miss Bury was the daughter of Lady Charlotte Bury and her second husband, the Rev. John Bury, rector of Lichfield in Hampshire. The attractive and vivacious Lady Charlotte was the youngest child of the 5th Duke of Hamilton and lady-in-waiting to Queen Caroline. After leaving the Bury's possession, the portrait was owned by the painter John Brett.
