Catalogue Note

This self-portrait displays John Butler Yeats’s exceptional paint-handling techniques and ability to capture personality. John Butler Yeats worked on self-portraits throughout his life. His final self-portrait, commissioned by John Quinn, invigorated Yeats during his time in New York, and he laboured on it for eleven years. It was found unfinished beside his death-bed.
