Catalogue Note

Jeanne Robert Foster (1879-1970), American poet, journalist, social reformer and celebrated beauty was a devoted friend to John Butler Yeats and cared for him throughout his last years. Through John Butler Yeats, Foster befriended the wealthy lawyer and prominent art collector, John Quinn, and the two travelled throughout Europe together to collect art. On her death in 1970, she was buried in her family plot next to John Butler Yeats, who had once fondly said of Foster, ‘To be with you is to come home after weary alien sojourning.’
