Catalogue Note
After the Battle of Lexington, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress decided it was time to survey available armaments with a view to supplying those patriots in need: "Resolved, that the Selectmen of the several Towns ... hereby are directed and impowered to examine into the State of the Equipment of such Inhabitants ... as are or may be inlisted into the Service of the Colony; and in case of a Deficiency there, to apply to such inhabitants ... as ... can best spare their Arms or Accoutrements, and to borrow or purchase the same for the Use of said Inhabitants so inlisted ..."
