Catalogue Note

Although the inaugural class to the Baseball Hall of Fame was elected in 1936, the Cooperstown shrine did not open until the summer of 1939. For that event, members of the first four classes attended the induction ceremony and eleven Hall of Famers signed this remarkable first day cover: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, and Babe Ruth (class of 1936); Larry Lajoie, Connie Mack, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young (class of 1937); Grover Cleveland Alexander (class of 1938); Eddie Collins and George Sisler (class of 1939).
