Catalogue Note

The first edtion of these popular tales to use the "Mother Goose" title, and the first to contain full-page illustrations. First published in 1697 with the title Histoires ou Contes du temps passé (Paris: Barbin), the present edition presents the eight stories in French and English. The finely-drawn extra-illustrations appear to be from a later era, perhaps ca. 1830-1850.

Very rare on the market, only 1 copy has appeared at auction since 1975 (Sotheby's 2 June 1982, lot 146). OCLC reports five copies (Harvard; Princeton; Tresoar, Leeuwarden, Netherlands; Bayerische Staatsbibliothek; and Mannheim University).
