Catalogue Note
First editions. Racine had just renounced the vanities of the stage and retired to his Jansenism, when he reappeared to write these two biblical tragedies for Madame de Maintenon's school at Saint Cyr. She instructed the author to provide something for the young actresses that had a serious moral point in a historical setting, that was written as to make possible a musical rendition, and specified that the "love interest" must not exceed settled conjugal affection. Music was composed for Esther by Jean-Baptiste Moreau (1656-1733).
