Fifth edition, the last published by the author, giving the definitive text which provided the basis for all subsequent editions. From the first edition of 1665, the author added maxims to each new edition. The present edition, completed just before the author's death contains 504 maxims. This copy has the privilege misdated 23 July (for 3 July).
