Catalogue Note
Actor Zachary Scott's copy of the script for Requiem for a Nun, inscribed by him in pencil on the title-page with his name and address at New York's Dakota. The title is also inscribed in another hand, "Fully cut script. 12/12/58." Scattered throughout the script are over 25 additions and alterations of dialogue in pencil in a tiny hand, possibly William Faulkner's. Faulkner was in Princeton and New York at the end of November 1958 and may have made these alterations. Scott and his wife Ruth Ford had appeared in a successful run of Requiem in London earlier in the year and now the production was preparing to open on Broadway in January 1959. Faulkner had encountered Zachary Scott in Hollywood in the 1940's and had first known Ruth Ford when she was an Ole Miss coed dating his brother Dean. He was to renew his acquaintance with her in Hollywood too. In late November Faulkner was in Random House's New York offices working on The Mansion. He was often a guest at Scott and Ford's apartment at the Dakota when he visited the city, and he may have gone over revisions of the script with the couple. It is not known how the script ended up back in Faulkner's possession.
