Catalogue Note
Copy 187 of 226 numbered copies of "the sole instance of a 'livre d'artiste' based on a Faulkner text in his lifetime" (Peterson). Tandis que j'agonise (As I Lay Dying) was the first of Faulkner's novels to appear in French in Maurice Coindreau's masterful translation in 1934. Faulkner's works were read avidly if clandestinely during the German Occupation. This 1946 illustrated edition is a testament to his enduring popularity in Paris after the Liberation.
