Catalogue Note

A splendid, crisp copy of the first appearance of Pigouchet's famous "Set 3" of Hours metalcuts, with criblé grounds. Eight of the illustrations are from Set 3: Holy Grail, Tree of Jesse, Annunciation, Adoration of the Shepherds, Death of Uriah, Last Judgement, Trinity and Deposition. A clue to iconographic source of the Adoration cut may lie in its captioned names of the shepherds and shepherdesses, which suggest characters in mystery plays: Gobin le Gay, Le Beau Roger, Aloris, Alison, Ysamber, and Mahault.
