Catalogue Note
An early example of the first printed map of north west Asia and Tartary, from Ortelius's influential atlas, Theatrum orbis terrarum. The map depicts Japan, and is noted for its representation of California, the Sierra Nevada and present day Alaska. It appeared in every edition of the Theatrum from 1570 on, without revision.
