8 volumes, 12mo (6 3/8 x 3 1/2 in.; 160 x 90 mm). 30 engraved plates by Sauvé after Brissart, most unsigned; moderate browning, some oxidized spots costing a few letters, paper gouge in 1:P8 costing a few letters, paper creased and so printed on 3:Bb6, possibly costing some text on recto, remnants of some juvenile pencil scribbles on caption title of 6:A4 . Contemporary calf, spines gilt in six compartments (two reserved for lettering and numbering), edges stained red; spines and joints a bit dry and rubbed, a few joints starting, old scratches and scraps to boards; lower right corner of front free endpaper in vol. 8.

Catalogue Note

There were only three illustrated editions of Molière's works in the seventeenth century, this being the third and the second by Thierry, Barbin, and Trabouillet, who produced the first illustrated edition.
