Catalogue Note
First edition of this landmark publication of Russian costume, which set the fashion for numerous later European publications aiming to profit from the popular fascination with Britain's ally in the Napoleonic Wars. This publication was divided up among the booksellers Müller in Moscow, Rudinger in Riga, Wilcke in Reval and Rahbe. Colas saw copies with only 45 plates.
A work of extraordinary rarity: OCLC lists only 1 copy (Erfurt-Gotha); only 2 copies have appeared at auction in 38 years (one incomplete in 1978, and one at the Hesketh Sale, 2007 which sold, in a modern binding, for £12,600).
