Catalogue Note

First edition of the "complete" text, based on the manuscript which the publisher Brockhaus had bought, preceded only by extracts in his periodical Urania. The first five volumes of this edition were translated and edited by Wilhelm von Schütz, and the first four also contain his valuable prefaces. "The expurgation of the text by Schütz went considerably further than that by his successor, although both translators omitted text which Laforgue retained. On the other hand, some of the text which Laforgue omitted has been preserved in the German translation and the edition is very valuable on that account" (Childs).
