8vo (189 x 126 mm). Half-title, 42 illustrations from the woodcuts by Dalziel after John Tenniel, blue endpapers. Modern red morocco gilt by Bayntun,  the white rabbit gilt-stamped on front cover, spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt edges, original red cloth bound in at end; the binding fine, bright and unrubbed.  Second [first published] edition.   –Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. London: Macmillan & Co., 1872. 8vo (179 x 123 mm). Half-title, 50 illustrations from the woodcuts by Dalziel after John Tenniel.  Bound uniformly with the above in modern red morocco gilt by Bayntun, queen gilt-stamped on front cover. First edition.

Catalogue Note

The poor printing of the illustrations prompted Dodgson to recall the 1865 first printing of Alice and it was never offered for sale. However, as demonstrated here, though the title was dated 1866, at least a few copies of the new edition were available in time for Christmas of 1865.
