Catalogue Note

"Cardinal Caprara is not the legate anymore".

Napoleon informs his loyal councillor in Italy Antonio Aldini of the resignation of cardinal Caprara, Archbishop of Milano, as papal legate in Paris, which occured in February 1808 after Miollis's occupation of Rome. It is, for the Emperor, an important case for Italian affairs. Caprara implemented the Concordat of 1801 and participated in the coronation of Napoleon as King of Italy. The retirement is not a banishment, Napoleon authorizes Caprara to settle in any place in France or Italy but forbids him to leave these countries. The Archbishop chose to stay in Paris where he died a few years later.
