Catalogue Note

Treatment of a workman's injuries.

Todd was one of the workmen employed at the Shenandoah Falls under Richardson Stuart, in the Potomac Company's project to make that river navigable (see the Muster Roll of the Potomac Company, 18 October 1787, in the Gilder Lehrman collection). Tiffin (1726-1829) apprenticed to a student of medicine at the age of 12 and began practicing medicine at 17, later became the first governor of Ohio. His treatment of Todd required amputating his hand and a finger, and the bill charges for dressings and sundry medicines, in compensation for which £8 Virginia currency was required.
