Catalogue Note

Washington's signature on a war-date address leaf.

John Parke Custis (1754-1781) was Washington's stepson, son of Martha by her first marriage to Daniel Parke Custis. He served as a civilian aide-de-camp to Washington during the siege of Yorktown, and died shortly after the surrender. New Kent County was the site of the Dandridge estate on the Pamunkey River, known as "White House."
