Catalogue Note

Shuffling officers in the defense of New York.

Colonel Bond recommends various officers for promotion to fill vacancies in his regiment created by Major Nathaniel Cudworth’s discharge. Gen. Nathanael Greene supports Bond’s recommendations in the postscript: "... I believe there cannot be a more judicious appointment than those recommended, and I apprehend none that will be more satisfactory to the other officers — all which is submitted to your excellency's consideration ..."

Nathaniel Cudworth (1745–1826), who was major of Col. Jonathan Brewer’s Massachusetts regiment during 1775, was discharged from Col. Asa Whitcomb’s 6th Continental Regiment on 13 Feb. 1776. George Washington allowed Cudworth to fill the vacant position as major in Col. William Bond’s 25th Continental Regiment, but we note from the present document that he was discharged in April.
