Catalogue Note
First edition of the first book to mention the mezzotint engraving process, and containing the first mezzotint published in England. The print, by Prince Rupert, is the head of an executioner, a detail from his The Great Executioner, first published in Frankfurt in 1658 after a painting by Ribera. Through the influence of Evelyn and his Sculptura the mezzotint process became highly regarded as a graphic technique in England.
