Catalogue Note

First edition and a true miniature incunable of the author's own translation of his Zeitglöcklien des Lebens und Leiden Christi, a popular devotional work in which the prayers are divided into 24 parts according to the hours of the day. Each is concerned with an event in the life of Christ. The woodcuts seem to be unique to this edition; most of the metalcuts, based on the Life of Christ by the Master of the Berlin Passion, appeared later in Johann Landen's edition of 1498, one of only a few sets of "dotted print" illustrations in printed books of the incunable period. This copy has the metalcut of the Last Judgement on p5v.
