Catalogue Note

gatsby inscribed by fitzgerald in hollywood. On the half-title the author has penned, "For Ned Griffith / from his friend / F Scott Fitzgerald / Hollywood 1939."

That Griffith was the recipient of another  presentation, a copy of Tender is the Night with an inscription referencing the present title ("For Ned Griffith, who liked Gatsby,....") is noted in Nicholas Basbanes Every Book Its Reader (HarperCollins, 2005 ).

The original Modern Library edition of Gatsby sold poorly and ended up being remaindered (complete with a remainder stamp) shortly after it was issued. The present copy is free of remainder marks and one might suppose that Griffith might have purchased it new at around the time he bought a copy of Tender.  The new introduction by Fitzgerald for this edition remains perhaps his best response to the contemporary literary reviews of the day.
