William Camden fut historien, géographe et archéologue, ami d'Abraham Ortelius et correspondant de Jacques-Auguste de Thou. Edmond Gibson fut évêque de Londres, il traduisit cet ouvrage en 1695, en y insérant des améliorations et des ajouts.
