Catalogue Note

As the master of political magic in Chinese art, Liu Dahong narrates the shared history of a generation using his own imagination and memory. Even in his bizarre and Kafkaesque images of an alienated, surrealistic world the voice of his personal historical narrative remains compelling and suggestive. For Liu, surreal scenarios occur every day and it is difficult to distinguish between reality and drama, truth and magic. His personal experiences have convinced him that the artist most faithful to reality must also be the most surrealistic and magical.
