Catalogue Note

This remarkable and massive sterling silver and bronze frame surrounds its original panoramic photograph of the third running of the Indianapolis 500. It was created by the Hertz Art Metal Shop, and it utilizes a technique of overlaying silver and bronze, which they had patented in 1912.

The framed photograph was presented to legendary American driver Louis Disbrow, who finished 8th behind the wheel of a Case. Details of the car’s owner, driver, finishing position, and average speed are cast in sterling silver and applied to the corners of the frame.

Only three such frames are recorded, one each for 3rd, 5th, and 8th place; the 3rd and 5th place frames can be found at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, with this 8th place frame and photograph being the only piece in public hands. It is an irreplaceable part of American racing history that was once held in the hands of one of the Brass Era’s most renowned drivers.
