The elegant flow of the inscription on this present cut-steel plaque is of the highest order and is complemented by the assured handling of the elaborate scrollwork, testament both to the calibre of the calligrapher and the skill of the steelworker. In the first stage of production the outlines of the inscription would have been copied in pencil, ink or charcoal on paper by a master-scribe and then transferred to the steel plate by means of a stencil or pounce. The challenge for the metalworker, constrained by his unwieldy set of tools, would be to capture the elegance and fluidity of the scribe's hand; a task that he was more than up to, as evidenced in the filigree-like delicacy of the design.
