Catalogue Note

Whereas the quantity of surviving fragments of Mamluk textiles suggest that needlework as seen on the present example was popular in both clothing and interior wear, the lack of complete Mamluk costumes available make this set all the more interesting. The striking vividness of the set after almost seven centuries is indicative of the superior dyeing and stitching techniques of Mamluk craftsmen. A cap that is close in shape and in style of embroidery to this lot is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv.no. EA1984.123).
