Catalogue Note

inscriptions

The present firman was written to the local governor of Erzurum, asking for the establishment of peace between Armenian neighbours.

The crown illumination with symmetrically arranged bunches of flowers is an excellent example of intertwining components of the Ottoman decorative vocabulary and rococo elements in one design. The gold illumination surrounding the main text is typical of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century firman decoration. A similar firman bearing the tughra of Mahmud II, dated 1224 AH/1809 AD is in the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum (inv.no.2294), Istanbul.
