Description

  • jade, gemstones, enamel, steel
the narrow double-edged tapering steel blade with central ridge, with chiselled design and gold overlay decoration, the light-green jade hilt with Fabergé enamelled collar decorated with naturalistic floral motifs

Condition

In overall good condition, The collar, or thin band around the handle which was set with red gemstones, was stamped with a Hallmark from Russia, dated between 1899 - 1903, and also contains the mark of Michael Perkhin, who was a Fabergé workmaster, but it does not actually contain a Fabergé stamp. The enamelled section with quillons, is not marked, but appears to have been added to this band as a later marriage. We carried out a surface test on the metal and determined that it was gold, but we did not do a destructive test. Some of the enamelling is worn and there are also areas of corrosion, particularly to the interior. The stamped band appears to be set with garnets, even though due to their setting, we are not completely certain of this. The blade itself is in general good condition even though it has a corroded surface with some rubbing to the gold overlay consistent with age and use. It appears to have been added at a later date. The handle was once set with a stone but now it is missing. As viewed.
