Catalogue Note

A similar filigree casket of larger proportions is in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art (inv. no. 283, illustrated in Rogers 2007, p.242, no.283). Even though the shape is associated with European models, the filigree work is attributable to Gujarati craftsmen who had a long-standing tradition of this type of intricate workmanship. Another comparable casket is in the Museo Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon (inv. no. 67, Gift of J. Kugel 1953), attributed to the seventeenth century.
