the pen case of cylindrical form with fitted lid, painted with floral bouquets between panels containing calligraphic inscriptions, old collection label: '2524 ...ISW', the accompanying gilt-metal inkwell with engraved calligraphic bands between bands with floral scrolls worked in repoussé, the base with an inscriptive cartouche and central calligraphic palmette
Condition
Both in good condition, the pen case with some ware consistent with use and age, minor parts of painted lacquer missing particularly near foot and to interior of lid, some rubbing to surface of tombak inkwell, as viewed.

On the base, in the central cartouche, a suggested reading of possibly Sufi meaning in Arabic: sahib hadha mihbara sar zumra khulafa al-kuttab / muhammad khalifa li-ma'dan al-kuttab 1120
'The owner of this inkwell is the head of a group of caliph-scribes. Muhammad is the successor to the goldmine of scribes, 1120' (1708-9 AD).
In the palmette in the middle of the inscription: 'amal qad rumi
'Rumi has made [it]'.
On either side are verses in Ottoman Turkish and further verses run down the body. On the inside of the lid is a saying of the Prophet and a saying of 'Ali. There are further verses in Turkish running down the accompanying papier-maché case which is signed at the top 'amal ahmad 1196 (1781-2 AD)
