Catalogue Note

The original vast ceiling fresco by Guido Reni (1575-1642) is in the Pallavicini-Rospigliosi Palace in Piazza Monte Cavallo, Rome. A micromosaic panelof the subject, circa 1870, mounted in a gold bracelet, is now in the Gilbert Collection, (Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics, The Gilbert Collection, 2000, no. 188). According to the author, micromosaics after Aurora can be found in several versions, two in private collection in Los Angeles, and one in the Hammond Museum, New York State. Although Luigi Moglia is credited with a version, this example is very close in detail to a plaque signed by Lorenzo Cassio (sale, Christie's New York, 15 September 1991, lot 71).
