Catalogue Note
This floral composition is based on a Roman floor mosaic discovered in the 1790s at the Quintili and now in the Sala della Croce Greca of the Vatican’s Pio Clementine Museum. Many micromosaic panels based on the same subject were made from the early 19th century onwards and became, as techniques developed, progressively more refined and gorgeous as in the present lot. For other examples, see Domenico Petochi, I mosaici minuti romani dei secoli XVIII e XIX, Roma, 1981, pp. 187-189.
