the silver frame of arched form, the front applied with a papal coat of arms on flower-set diagonal straps and flowers, surmounted by jewelled and enamelled scrolls, the doors opening to reveal an ivory triptych carved with Marcus Aurelius and his army crossing the Danube on a bridge of boats, within a frame carved with formal ornament and Roman Army banners, each panel surmounted by a coat-of-arms, the central panel also inscribed: Exercitus Romanus ponte e naribus constructo Danubium traiicit M. Aurelius cum exercitu suo, between initials M and A, apparently unmarked
Condition
Generally excellent condition although the case would benefit from professional cleaning. the front strap is loose. Minor losses to enamel. The central panel is constructed in two parts held together by intentional silver-gilt clasps; the left side has slightly risen causing a wider gap than was probably originally intended. The ivory of the right hand panel has separated just above and below the ox. There are three tiny nicks to edge of frames (two on left and one on right) at the level of the two silver pins on the central panel. Otherwise the ivory is remarkably crisp and clean

Catalogue Note
The central subject is taken from the column of Marcus Aurelius (now in the Piazza Colonna, Rome), thought to have been erected originally by Marcus's son Commodus in 180-190 AD to celebrate his father's victories over the Germanic tribes of the Marcomanni, Quadi and Sarmatians and modelled on Trajan's column but taller.
The papal arms on the central panel and case are those of Pope Paul III, born Alessandro Farnese (1468-1549). Those on the right are the Medici arms and those on the left are decorative.
