Description

  • A carved ivory tankard, with jewelled gilt mounts, mid-19th century and later
  • gemstones, gilt-metal, ivory
  • 31.5cm., 12 3/8 in. high
the sleeve carved with a boar-hunting subject in low relief, the finial as a wizened huntsman and his hound, faun mask and scroll handle, the lid and base rim incised with leaves on a textured ground, within frilled borders, further set with carnelian, malachite and stained chard bosses within cable mounts

Condition

The handle and finial are mid-19th century, the unlined sleeve is probably early 20th century, and the metal portions are mid-20th century. The sleeve has a number of small cracks rising from the base, and some cracking visible on the interior which is not visible on the exterior as the interior has been partially varnished to strengthen the ivory. The finial figure is chipped in several places such as the border of his hat ; the dog's left leg missing and the lance lacking from his hand. One carnelian boss on the lid has a small chip, otherwise an impressive piece.
