Description

  • An English gold-mounted agate necessaire, London, circa 1760
  • ivory, agate, gold, enamel, garnet,
  • 5.3 cm, 2 1/8 in
upright rectangular form, the gold cagework mounts chased with garlands and scrolls and enclosing banded agate panels over red lacquer, the front and back overlaid with exotic birds, gold motto on white enamel collar: Rien n'est agrable eloignez de vous, (sic) garnet pushpiece, the interior complete with two gold-capped scent bottles, ivory slips, folding knife, pencil, two spoons, tweezers, handle and two screw-in implements, lid mirror-lined

Condition

Excellent condition throughout of goldwork. Minor time damage comprising: condensation discolouring visible on lacquer below hardstone panels particularly on lid and base. Garnet pushpiece cracked. Original flaws in white enamel collar. Original mirror inside lid flawed and velvet with some minor spotting. All implements present and in good order. Both scent bottles have matching gold caps and original stoppers.
