Catalogue Note

Superbement élaboré, le décor du panneau associe la représentation - rare - d'une tête de buffle stylisée s'épanouissant dans les volutes des doubles motifs saita et, projeté en très haut relief, un motif analogue formant l'autel. A cette sculpture monoxyle s'ajoutent les éléments rapportés : cornes ponctuant la tête de buffle, et une petite effigie adu dont la parure signifie le haut statut social du défunt. Quatre trous percés dans l'autel de part et d'autre de la statue indiquent l'ajout d'éléments décoratifs, aujourd'hui disparus. cf. Volkenkundig Museum Nusantara (Nias. Tribal treasures, 1990, n°134, 137 et 139) pour des panneaux-autels comparables.
