Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Glued in many places. No feathers around the head is missing. Classic light-weight wood typical for this type of figure. Fine polychromy.

Catalogue Note

Exposée, fichée dans le sol, durant les cérémonies malangan afin d'honorer la personne défunte, cette statue agissait non pas comme un portrait, "mais bien plutôt comme une représentation de l'énergie vitale qui l'a engendré et animé" (Peltier et Gunn, 2007, p. 49). Les motifs ancestraux propres à l'individu ou au clan composent la complexe imbrication de motifs floraux et zoomorphes. Voir Peltier & Gunn (2007, p. 223, n°86) pour une statue malangan de l'Ethnologishes Museum de Berlin (inv. n° VI I4584), dont le visage principal apparaît, comme ici, au centre de l'architecture ajourée.
