Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. An old loss on the proper left eyebrow and an open crack on the proper left side of the head. Both horns have been glued at their base and the proper left one also on the upper part. Some few brighter chips on the fine dark brown patina.

Catalogue Note

Ce masque mishi, au visage "à facettes" caractéristique, symbolise chez les Bamana la générosité. La phrase qui le désigne dans le cadre de l'initiation, et qui préside donc à son esthétique, renvoie aux concepts conjugués de "mère", de "cercle parfait" et d' "esprit de la création" (Malé in Van Dyke, 2008, p. 62). Voir Nooter Roberts & Roberts (1996, p. 42, n°49) pour un masque comparable dans la collection du Fine Arts Museum de San Francisco (inv. n° 1996.12.36) et Sotheby's (New York, mai 2012, n°193) pour un autre acquis avant 1961 auprès d'Emil Storrer.
