Catalogue Note
Robert Home (1752-1834) travelled to India in 1791 and painted a number of historic scenes, including Lord Cornwallis receiving the sons of Tipu Sultan as Hostages, which typified his talent for observation and detail. Home also produced a number of sketches of Tipu's soldiers, including the present two works which closely compare to a watercolour of a soldier in the Victoria and Albert Museum (see Tigers Round the Throne, The Court of Tipu Sultan (1750-1799), Zamana Gallery, London, 1990, p.55). He published his Select Views in Mysore, the Country of Tippoo Sultan in London and Madras in 1794.
In 1814 he moved to Lucknow and became a court painter of Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, and died in 1834 after moving to Kanpur.
