Description

  • An Etruscan Bronze Figure of a Warrior
  • Bronze
  • Height 4 1/4 in. 10.8 cm.
striding with the left leg advanced, his raised right hand formerly holding a javelin, the left extended hand a shield, with powerfully muscled legs and torso, his lively face with prominent chin, straight nose, and large round eyes, the tightly curled hair indicated by rows of stamped circles.

Provenance

Ian Woodner (1903-1990), New York
Sotheby's, New York, June 13th, 1996, no. 52, illus.
Estate of William B. Dietrich (1942-2010), Villanova, Penn., acquired at the above sale

Condition

Generally very good and as it appears in the catalogue photo. There are small corroded surface areas on the ankle, right thigh, and right upper and lower arm. The left hand is somewhat truncated, probably because of the shield it once held. The right hand seems somewhat worn and abraded. The surface of the entire figure most likely repatinated and waxed at some point.
