Description

  • A Fragmentary Marble Head of a Youth

  • Total height 16 3/4 in. 42.5 cm.; Height of head 8 1/2 in. 21.6 cm.
possibly Apollo, turned slightly to his right, with parted lips and almond-shaped eyes with drilled inner corners, his wavy hair parted in the center, falling in rich, deeply drilled curls over the forehead, brushed back over the ear, and bound in a fillet; the neck and back of the head restored in marble; mounted on an 18th century white marble socle and plinth.

Condition

As shown and described, metal clamp at top of head joining ancient and modern portions, hair of ancient head weathered, the face vigorously cleaned, patches of restoration in plaster on chin, lower lip, tip of nose, top of bridge of nose, and above proper right eye, discoloration surrounding join on proper left side of neck, repaired breaks to modern portion including diagonally across back of head through proper right cheek and ear and across hair falling down back of neck, a few chips along join on front of neck.
