Description

  • An Attic Red-Figured Kylix, Attributed to the Wedding Painter
  • Glazed terracotta
  • Diameter 9 1/4 in. 23.5 cm.
the tondo decorated with two himation-clad youths, one leaning on a staff, the exterior painted on each side with a woman holding a mirror between two youths, a palmette in each handle zone, the inscription, "Ho pais kalos" painted on the interior and exterior, details in added red.

Condition

Repaired from multiple small fragments with in-painting along joins, foot repaired from about seven fragments and reinforced through underside of foot and presumably into stem with a brass screw and washer, entire surface lacquered.

Catalogue Note

In a 1966 letter, Robert M. Cook, then professor of Classical archaeology at Cambridge University, attributed this cup to the Group of the Penthesilea Painter.
