Description

  • A Roman Marble Figure of Fortuna

  • Height 17 3/4 in. 45.1 cm.
standing with the weight on her right leg and holding a cornucopia cradled in her left arm, and wearing a chiton with overfold, and himation falling from her left shoulder across the back, extending over the lower part of her body, and draped over her left forearm; the extremities once restored in marble.

European private collection, 18th/19th century (based on the restoration techniques)
American private collection, acquired at auction in the United States in the 1960s/1970s

Condition

As shown and described, surface weathered and cleaned, rust stains at sites of former restorations/ancient additions, stress crack running diagonally across proper right thigh and partially filled with plaster, scattered chips and abrasions including a chip on proper left knee filled with plaster, loss to the front top section of the cornucopia, waxy restoration material on front edge and underside of base discolored.
