Condition

Condition Report from Simon Parkes, Art Conservation, Inc. (9/25/13): This work is in beautiful condition. Any thinness to the paint layer in the lower left and on the far right side of the background appears to be intentional. The canvas is still on its original stretcher and unlined. There are only a couple of retouches in the upper background visible under ultraviolet light. In the signature, the uprights of the "K" and "h" of "Kuhn" read slightly stronger. However, it is unlikely that this corresponds to strengthening or restoration; it is more likely to be medium-heavy paint original to the artist. If there is slight strengthening here, it is of no consequence.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
