Condition

Condition report prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, November 5, 2010: This painting is on a heavy wooden panel. The panel is un-broken and sturdy. The paint layer has not been cleaned for some time and the image exhibits some unevenness, abrasion and possibly some blooming to the varnish or glaze. Under ultraviolet light restorations are only visible on both sides to diminish some frame abrasion. To the naked eye although there may not be any restorations beneath an older varnish, the paint layer appears to be over-cleaned in places. If the picture were to be cleaned, some of this abrasion would have to be delicately retouched in order to re-form the image to one which more closely represents what Peto had in mind.
